I believe Seth Godin came up with and/or elaborated on permission vs interruption advertising. This concept can be applied to many things in life such as the use of humor or being ‘funny’. Or the attempt at being funny. I have learned and am still learning this ever so important axiom. No one wants to be interrupted in their day with an in your face ad or an in your face rant that someone thinks is funny.

When you attempt to be humorous and the passengers are not comfy on your bus, you will fail miserably. Not only will you interrupt their peaceful day, you will usually irritate them to the point of dislike. Bless your heart and the many hearts who invade the peace of an innocent fellow human, but don’t force funny. Let it happen. And it will happen.

I find this when I am teaching my improv comedy workshops. I  have those that want to be funny right away. They come in with planned jokes and disrupt ever scene they are in. However, when they learn that getting permission from their teammates who just set them up for a laugh, they are delighted. And as like Pavlovs dogs, they cannot wait for the permission bell to ring.

So when you are wanting to be funny at any given moment. Stop. Wait. Listen. Look for the set-up, set-up…then when permission is given..TWIST!

I come from a very humorous Irish, Catholic family. Though very mentally unstable, we used humor to cope with may of our dysfunctional ways. I also took my sense of humor to school with me and found it to be very useful though many of my teachers, principals and hall monitors did not find too amusing. That did not stop me from holding full comedy show in the library in second grade or doing impressions of any and all subs that entered our class.

I found being funny was a true crowd pleaser and allowed me to make friends easily while enabling me to other benefits like not being beat up, getting away with things, being invited to the cool kids table and even asked to lead our school in the fight song every Friday evening during football season.

It was not until I spent the last 26 years honing my humor did I find that being funny, laughing and using one’s humor at the opportune time had many real life benefits. There are so many benefits to list, but i have written a starter kit to get us started.

Below you will find just a few benefits that humor has for our health, business and relationships.

Health: Laughter decreases stress & increases immune cells & infection-fighting antibodies which triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals.

Business: Using  humor correctly in business can build credibility & likability, makes people listen, boosts brainpower & will increase profits.

Relationships:  Humor will build stronger bonds with people, build confidence, diffuse tension, put things into perspective & make you more creative.

I will continue my findings about humor in my next blog. And until then, keep smilin…it does a body good.

bearpoop

I know the ol’ does a bear poop in the woods? cliche is a big debate among most of the people on Earth at one time or another. However, studies show a bear is more likely to pop in a lime green kayak than he is in the woods.

This study was done in Bultrap, Alabama so it’s validity has not been verified. Ever.

The myth that pitbulls are mean, aggressive, wild, crazy dogs that bite is totally false. Yes some owners make their dogs mean and abuse dogs which is not accepted up in here.

The public needs to be educated that pitbulls, part of the bully breed family were actually called the nanny dog in England. This was because the ‘pitbull’ is great with kids; friendly; social and the most loyal dog you will find.

I have a rottie/pitbull mix and he is probably the most friendly dog i have met. His name is Grayson and he is a lover, not a biter so take that you haters of a breed of dog you don’t know anything about. And unite PitBull, Bully Breed , Rottie and all dog lovers!!!

The above cartoon deals with a sexual position called ‘doggie style’ which was invent by Rex, a dingo-lab mix who lived in the Caveman period which was a long tome ago.

Humans developed this method of sex for those cave women who were not very attractive or had not learned to walk upright.
